Okwamanzi Arts Junction presents a dynamic solo performance that not only honours anti-apartheid activist Onkgopotse Tiro’s life but also demonstrates the transformative potential of education. Written by Ayanda ka Nobakabona and directed by Mfundo Zono, Tiro’s Toughloop Testimony presents education as a vehicle for liberation, empowerment, and societal transformation, finding resonance in shared experiences. Tiro’s Toughloop Testimony won multiple awards in the 2023 Zabalaza Theatre Festival, including best script, best actor, and the Finest of the Festival award. It was also nominated this year for the Fleur de Cap Best Solo Play, Best South African New Script, and Best New Director.

Ayanda ka Nobakabona is a playwright and actor from Zwelitsha, Dunoon, where he currently lives. Tiro’s Toughloop Testimony won Ka Nobakabona numerous awards, such as Best Script, Best Actor, and Finest of the Festival in the 2023 Baxter Theatre’s Zabalaza Awards, and was nominated for Best Solo Play and Best South African New Script at the 2024 Fleur de Cap awards.

Mfundo Zono is a theatre-maker, storyteller, performer, and educator who has worked both locally and internationally in Storytelling, Puppetry, and Theatre/Drama. In 2008, in collaboration with Taproot company from Newcastle, England, Zono directed a play called Weave for the National Arts Festival. Zono graduated from the Magnet Theatre School in 2015 and holds a BA in Theatre Making from the University of Cape Town. His directorial work on Tiro’s Toughloop Testimony earned him a nomination for best new director at the 2024 Fleur de Cap Awards.
