Sopranos Marina Pienaar and Elsabé Richter join guitarist Anne Haasch to take us on a journey across the landscapes of Spain, France, Italy, and the United States, culminating in the exile of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The program, which also includes works by Falla, Debussy and Fauré, weaves together the sounds of folk traditions, the elegance of art song, and the expressive power of guitar and voice to highlight universal themes of travel, longing, and home. This concert is not only a journey of musical discovery, but also an exciting exchange between South African and German musicians – please join us for this wonderful collaboration!

About the PerformersMarina Pienaar (soprano) made her operatic debut as the title role in The Fairy Queen at Woordfees 2018 and graduated cum laude from Stellenbosch University under the guidance of Lauren Dasappa. In 2021, she completed her postgraduate studies with distinction at the Royal College of Music, London, studying with Janis Kelly and earning Special Mentions in prestigious competitions. Upon her return to South Africa, Marina joined Cape Town Opera’s OperaLab and performed as Young Artist at The Songmakers’ Guild. In addition to performing, Marina is a voice lecturer at Stellenbosch University, a music teacher at Stellenbosch High School, and a private vocal coach.

Elsabé Richter (soprano) holds an MMus in Vocal Performance from North-West University and completed a scholarship year at the Norwegian Academy of Music, guided by Svein Bjørkøy, Håkan Hagegård, and Mona Julsrud. Her repertoire spans early music, art songs, opera, and sacred works. Key operatic roles include Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) and Belinda (Dido and Aeneas). Recognized for her contributions to productions like Lamento and Bloed en Rose, she has received multiple award nominations, including a 2024 WOORDtroFEE and a 2017 kykNET Fiësta Award.

German guitarist Anne Haasch is based in Weimar, where she established herself as a sought-after soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. A winner of the “Ostracized Music” Interpretation Competition in Schwerin, Haasch explores works by Jewish and ostracized composers, including Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Gerhard, and Milhaud. She performs extensively, both solo and with clarinetist Jan Doormann as Duo Arvoredo. A dedicated educator, Haasch teaches at the Universities of Music in Weimar, Leipzig, and Cologne. Her acclaimed 2019 debut album features works by Antonio José, Milhaud, Poulenc, Gerhard, and Takemitsu.
