SEE SAW | Shade’s Retrospective Takeover at One Park

Shade envisions a world where waste, creativity, and community intersect to inspire new ways of living and imagining.

See Saw is a retrospective celebration of performances, artworks and art-in- works from Shade’s network of artists and dreamers. Drawing from its extensive archive, films and collections, Shade presents playful encounters throughout One Park for a week.

An eclectic mix of visual artists, musicians, and chefs reimagine and respond to the essence of Shade, for Cape Town with several events over the course of the takeover. Shade reintroduces artworks, experiences and sounds from innercity Johannesburg from past collaborations and projects. An array of musicians, ambient experimentalists and sound artists put the player on high volume for dancing, dreaming or delicacies to be shared. Filmmakers and VJs rewind the tape seen before reiterating documentation and videos to create new montages for the public to see. Both original artworks and reprints litter the walls with a renewed curation of intergenerational collisions between youth and emerging/established artists and crafters alike. See Saw is our version of seeing things reimagined, things seen before in various iterations which highlights Shade’s approach of social collaging and hybridisations of material culture and the players that explore these worlds.

PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD

This 6 course concept dinner facilitates the collision of culinary experience and art, bringing together children in our art programmes and chefs. Playing with your food is not an admonishment but an invitation to explore mouthfuls of texture, serving ceramics for play play eating and taste budding flavours, where things don’t taste how they appear by tricking tongues while talking trash. Drawing inspiration from found objects and Waste Not Want Nots, this dinner is a prompt to scrap the table manners, and put your feet up.

Inspired by children. Curated by adult children.
