The UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble, comprising of about forty-five under- and
post-graduate students returns to the stage for their second concert of 2025,
under the baton of Brandon Phillips, Head of Woodwind and Ensembles at UCT.
This dynamic programme opens with James Barnes’ energetic Alvamar Overture, a
spirited work that showcases the ensemble’s precision and vitality. The
concert continues with Gustav Holst’s beloved First Suite for Military Band, a
cornerstone of wind ensemble repertoire known for its lyrical elegance and
bold harmonies. A highlight of the evening will be Mike Mower’s Concerto for
Flute and Wind Orchestra, featuring Lisa van Wyk as soloist. Mower’s vibrant
and jazz-infused concerto provides the perfect platform for van Wyk’s
expressive artistry and dazzling technique. The performance concludes with Van
McCoy’s rousing African Symphony.
