Get ready for an unforgettable evening at the 14th Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture on 23 November 2024! This year, we’re reflecting on “Bearing Witness,” a powerful theme that challenges us to confront the injustices we see and take action to make a difference. As part of a year-long campaign recognising both the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections and the 40th anniversary of Archbishop Desmond Tutu receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, this event will connect the past with the present to inspire the future.

We’re thrilled to welcome two incredible Nobel Peace Prize laureates as our keynote speakers: journalist Maria Ressa and human rights advocate Oleksandra Matviichuk. Maria Ressa, awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for defending freedom of expression, and Oleksandra Matviichuk, recognised in 2022 for her work documenting war crimes in Ukraine, both embody the courage to bear witness in times of crisis. They’ll be joined by Sudanese journalist and Sky News Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir, who will help us dive into the relevance of bearing witness today, especially with global issues like the ongoing struggles in Sudan.

But that’s not all—we’re also bringing in music and poetry to reflect on 30 years of freedom in South Africa.

Revered jazz pianist Andile Yenana brings a sound that’s distinctly South African, rooted in his Eastern Cape heritage. An award-winning artist and former Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, Andile has shaped the contemporary jazz scene, collaborating with icons and sharing his expertise with the next generation. Poet and storyteller Diana Ferrus captures the depth of South Africa’s journey through her words. Known for her poignant reflections on identity and history, Diana will share powerful pieces, reminding us of the spirit of those who paved the way to freedom. Her voice will guide us in honouring the past and embracing the future.

With a voice that bridges tradition and modernity, Zoë Modiga is a true artistic force. Her albums, including Yellow: The Novel and nomthandazo, reveal a soulful blend of jazz and activism, calling attention to pressing issues across Africa. Having performed on stages around the world, Zoë will bring her powerful presence to ours.
