Where can one find a cow, a tiger, a nightingale, a moth, a merlin, a dove, a swan, a bee, some fish, a rattlesnake, a griffin, two storks, twelve snails and a cat in an hour? Why, only in ‘Moonlit Menagerie’, of course. Quirk, romance and storytelling are carefully balanced in this recital of seldom-performed art songs by two of Cape Town’s foremost interpreters in the genre, namely Lente Louw (mezzo soprano) and Albie van Schalkwyk (piano). Two central works, ‘Songs to the moon’ by Jake Heggie and ‘8 Lieder und Gesänge’ Opus 58 by Johannes Brahms, are complemented by songs from Hugo Wolf and Reynaldo Hahn that also feature animals, the moon, or both.
