Johannes Brahms’s A German Requiem distinguishes itself from traditional requiems by using the Lutheran Bible, rather than the Latin text typically associated with the Requiem Mass. Brahms personally compiled the text, likely driven by the profound grief of losing his mother and the death of his mentor, Robert Schumann, which inspired the work’s completion in 1868.
On Saturday, 12 April, at the Uitsig DRC in Ridgeworth, three choirs will unite to perform this monumental piece: the Con Spirito Philharmonic, conducted by Sjoerd Alkema; the Cape Town Chamber Choir, under the direction of Antoinette Huyssen; and the Tygerberg City Choir, led by Peter Roux.
With Dr. Alkema conducting and featuring soloists Antoinette Huyssen (soprano) and Conroy Scott (baritone), this collaboration of orchestra and choirs presents a rare opportunity to experience the grandeur of Brahms’s masterpiece.
