A rent party is a social gathering where tenants invite musicians or DJs to perform while guests contribute money to help cover the rent. Originating in 1920s Harlem, these parties emerged as a form of mutual aid within Black communities facing economic hardship and racial discrimination.
As rents continue to rise in Cape Town, more and more people are being pushed out by rising living costs, development, and gentrification. A rent party feels just as relevant now as it did then.
