As a continuation of our recent visit to the South African National Gallery,
Friends members are invited to a special walkabout at the Slave Lodge, led by
Shanaaz Galant, one of the curators of the current exhibition.
This exhibition offers an important, intercontinental dialogue on the enduring
legacies of slavery, colonialism and the global pursuit of freedom. It is a
major international travelling exhibition developed by the Smithsonian’s
National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Cape Town
marks the third stop on its global tour, following its debut in Washington and
Brazil. It is a new form of curatorial practice, public engagement and
programming designed to collect, give voice to and provide a platform for
untold histories, memories and narratives. Connecting the past and the
present, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the archive of interviews
generously shared with the project to link local stories to global
communities. The walkabout will also include the Jan Smiesing Room (formerly
the Slave Lodge hospital). This promises to be a thought-provoking and
insightful visit, offering a unique opportunity to engage directly with the
exhibition and its curator.
Meeting point: Entrance to the Slave Lodge
Parking: Available in the gallery parking area on St John’s Road
