CARMINA BURANA - MUCH LOVED BY MANY AND ON THE BUCKET LIST OF OTHERS!
Orff’s magnificent masterpiece will be staged on 22 and 23 August 2025 at 7 pm in the Jakes Gerwel Hall, UWC by The Symphony Choir of Cape Town joined by the SACS Boys High School Choir, members of the Langa Old Apostolic Church Choir, Rondebosch Preparatory Boys School Choir, Windworx and the Stellenbosch University Symphonic Wind Ensembles. This musical extravaganza will be conducted by Levi Alexander and feature 3 talented soloists: Lynelle Kenned (Soprano), Siphesihle Mdena (Counter Tenor) and William Berger (Baritone).
This popular work is a cantata composed between 1935 and 1936 by Carl Orff and based on 24 medieval songs and poems that cover a range of topics from the unpredictability of fortune (which waxes and wanes as the moon), the ephemeral nature of life, the joys of spring and also the pleasures and perils of love, drinking, gambling and lust.
And for those of us who were around in the 1970’s the opening gambit Oh Fortuna will always remind us of the Old Spice TV commercial!
The programme will also include Alexander Borodin’s beautiful Polovtsian Dances from his opera Prince Igor.
