The Urban Sounds Band was established in March 2024 with the intention of playing more upbeat and contemporary repertoire compared to the school’s jazz band and orchestra. This would be the band’s very first time participating in the Band Slam competition and hope to form part of the regular list of schools who participate. The band is managed by the head of the music department at Fairbairn College, Mr. Edwin Abrahams, and under his leadership and tutelage the band has achieved a few successful public performances. Their first competitive performance was at the Urban Schools Sports and Music Festival where they placed 3rd out of 12 schools. They also performed at the City Hall alongside Emo Adams, Loukmaan Adams, Robin Pieters, Mujahid George and Donvino Prins, as well as the Take Note Band. They have worked closely with the leader of the Take Note Band, Sean De Vries, and have been a frequent addition to shows featuring Emo Adams and Mujahid George around the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. The band aims to always include local charts in their performance sets and delivers a good variety of popular songs and genres which usually has their audiences dancing and singing along at many of their performances. The aim of this concert is to showcase a variety of songs that get people moving and feeling good. The proceeds of this concert will be towards the band travelling to Makhanda to attend this year’s National Youth Jazz Festival.
