Part 1: The Who - Character & RelationshipWith Tamith Hattingh

In this workshop, we focus on the “Who” - the heart of any scene: the characters and their relationships. Strong characters make for strong scenes, and this session is all about creating believable, grounded, and dynamic characters onstage.

We’ll explore how to: • Make bold, clear character choices from the moment you step into a scene • Use physicality, voice, and emotional point of view to define “who” you are • Establish strong relationships that drive scenes forward • Stay connected to your scene partner while staying true to your character • Avoid generic characters and lean into specificity and depth

This class is designed to help you walk into any scene with confidence in who you are, even before the first line is spoken. Whether you’re looking to deepen your character work or break out of familiar patterns, this workshop gives you practical tools to build compelling, memorable personas in the moment.

This session sets the tone for strong scene work by focusing on presence, transformation, and commitment to who you are in any given moment.

Prerequisite: Previous improv experience required. This is not a beginner class.

Part 2: The What - Action & PurposeWith Thomas Dods

The “What” of a scene gives it direction, stakes, and purpose. In this workshop, we focus on the what’s happening - the actions, objectives, and emerging patterns that make a scene engaging and dynamic.

We’ll explore how to: • Identify and establish the central action or premise of a scene • Play with clear objectives to give characters something to want or care about • Recognise and reinforce comedic patterns without forcing them • Be changeable and adapt to unexpected moves without derailing momentum • Make your choices matter and move the scene forward with clarity and intent

Whether your scene is grounded or absurd, emotional or comedic, the “what” helps it feel purposeful rather than meandering. This workshop is about making sure your scenes have something happening, and that you, as the improviser, are aware of what that is.

Prerequisite: Previous improv experience required. This class is ideal for improvisers looking to sharpen their scene work and deepen their understanding of what makes scenes compelling.

Part 3: Where - Environment & Space With Justine Beukes

A compelling scene doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The “Where” gives your scene texture, believability, and grounding - and great improvisers use the environment as an active tool, not just a backdrop.

In this workshop, we focus on the physical world of the scene: how you create, interact with, and are influenced by your surroundings.

We’ll explore how to: • Establish a clear location using object and space work from the start • Use the environment to influence character behaviour and emotional tone • Add specificity and clarity through mimed objects and spatial awareness • React to and build upon your scene partner’s physical offers • Avoid “talking heads” scenes by activating the space and making it matter

This class encourages you to think with your body as much as your brain - turning invisible space into something tangible, playful, and rich. By treating the environment as a character in its own right, your scenes will feel fuller, more connected, and alive.

Prerequisite: Previous improv experience required. Designed for performers ready to level up their physical storytelling and spatial awareness.
