Bertram House, situated at the top of Government Avenue in the centre of Cape Town, is currently closed to the public, as it is undergoing maintenance and restoration. This house is the only remaining example of the English Georgian- style red-brick houses that were once common in Cape Town. The house is said to have been built in around 1839 by English immigrant and notary John Barker, who named it in memory of his late wife, Ann Bertram Findlay, who had died in 1838.
