The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is an American prison drama directed and written by Frank Darabont, based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
The film follows banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite professing his innocence.
Over two decades, he befriends fellow inmate Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), a contraband smuggler, and becomes pivotal in a money-laundering scheme run by Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). The cast also includes William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore.
Darabont acquired the rights in 1987 but only began development in 1992, drafting the screenplay in eight weeks.
Castle Rock Entertainment approved a $25 million budget within two weeks of submission, leading to pre-production in early 1993.
Although set in Maine, filming took place primarily in Mansfield, Ohio, with the Ohio State Reformatory serving as Shawshank Prison.
Several high-profile actors, including Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Kevin Costner, were considered for Andy’s role.
The score was composed by Thomas Newman.
