THE ARTISTS:
EMMYLOU: With musical roots steeped in country and country-adjacent genres, Emma du Preez (formerly of Oh Mercy) and Landi Degenaar (The Betsies), have joined forces on a passion project and are excited to introduce you to Emmylou: a bluegrass country duo. Paying homage to Appalachian tradition while embracing elements of folk, country, Irish trad music and Americana, Emmylou blends the warm tones of the guitar and the sweet twang of the banjo to provide a rich soundscape upon which to lay exquisite harmonies.
SARAH BLAKE: Sarah Blake is a Cape Town-born vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer whose genre-blending music draws from jazz, soul, folk, and groove traditions. Whether anchoring the rhythm on upright bass or delivering searing vocals from behind a guitar, Sarah leads with disarming charm and fierce musicality. Her live sets are emotional journeys—filled with poetic lyrics, lush harmonies, deep grooves, and spontaneous improvisation. With every performance, Sarah Blake offers more than just music—she offers presence, poetry, and groove that audiences carry long after the final note. Sarah has performed and recorded alongside a range of respected artists including Zolani Mahola, Jeremy Loops, Frank Paco, Gerald Clark, Manouche, and has toured across Southern Africa, Europe, and the U.S. with both collaborative and solo projects. Influenced by artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Emily King, Norah Jones, and Tom Misch, Sarah brings both virtuosity and vulnerability to the stage. As a woman leading her own band in male-dominated spaces, she represents a bold, authentic voice in contemporary jazz and soul. Joined by the multi-talented CJ Bergh on guitar, who has played for Basson Laubscher, Groove Missionaries, Amy Tjasink, Meelu, Casey Lowery, Jake Gunn, and many others within the Cape Town blues scene, the duo bring you original music and good stories to boot for their debut performance at Alma Cafe.”
