Thamsanqa is a singer/songwriter from South Africa. His life has been
intricately intertwined with the magic of music. From a young age, music has
been a constant companion, with cherished memories of singing alongside his
mother in the church and discovering the enchanting world of musical
instruments within the church community.
Thamsanqa’s musical journey took a profound turn when he encountered the
marimba, an instrument that beautifully merges rhythm and harmonies. From the
moment he laid hands on it, he knew he had found his true passion. Ever since
that fateful encounter, Thamsanqa’s life has been a relentless dedication to
music. His love for music extends beyond personal fulfilment to his mission
of sharing the enchantment of this instrument with the world.
Not content with simply playing music, Thamsanqa has made a mark in the world
of music education. He’s had the privilege of working with outstanding non-
profit organizations like Education Africa, Marimba Education Foundation, and
the Boys and Girls Club South Africa. Through these organizations and various
schools, he has shared the gift of the marimba with people of all ages and
abilities, bringing immense joy and inspiration to countless lives.
He has also toured Africa and Europe extensively with Morena Leraba, a world
music musician from Lesotho. Being a part of Morena Leraba’s ensemble has
further enriched Thamsanqa’s musical journey. Singing and playing the marimba
alongside talented musicians, they’ve been fortunate to tour the world,
showcasing their unique sound to diverse audiences. Their record, ‘Fela sa Ha
mojela,’ has been met with enthusiasm and applause, solidifying Thamsanqa’s
presence on the international music stage.
But even with international success, Thamsanqa’s commitment to teaching
remains unwavering. When he’s not on tour, he continues to nurture the
musical talents of young students at St Dunstans College in Benoni, South
Africa, fostering a new generation of music enthusiasts.
Thamsanqa Ngwenya believes in the profound power of music to transcend
boundaries and touch people’s hearts. Through his harmonies and rhythmic
expressions, he aspires to leave a lasting impact on those who experience his
music.
