Peter Ndlala, a South African musician born in Rondebosch in 1973, is a
versatile bassist, soprano saxophonist, composer, arranger, and band leader.
Known for his innovative approach, Ndlala’s bass guitar is renowned for its
lead guitar-like presence, blending powerful and sensitive tones that guide
listeners on a deeply passionate musical journey. His solos are melodically
compelling, encouraging audiences to sing along through the night.
Ndlala’s musical education began with a two-year course at M.A.P.P. (Music,
Action for People’s Progress), where he first performed with the M.A.P.P. jazz
ensemble and participated in the Guinness Jazz Festival in 1992. His talent
was later recognised by South African jazz legend Winston Mankunku Ngozi,
marking the beginning of Ndlala’s evolution as a musician, combining Afro
music with jazz fusion, Ndlala’s style is rich in improvisation. He has
collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Winston Mankunku
Ngozi, George Werner, Spencer Mbadu, Richard Schilder, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, Rene
McLean, Errol Dyers, Judith Sephuma, Selaelo Selota, Macoy Mrubata, Swazi
Dlamini, Mimi Ntenjwa, and many others. His collaborations extend to
international stars such as Rashaan Patterson, and he is equally at home in
various musical genres and styles.
Ndlala currently works as a session musician and hosts a jam session at the Touch of Madness in Observatory. His latest album, Beira, showcases his unique musical vision.
