Who would Nelson Mandela have been without Hendrik Verwoerd? Who would Winnie Mandela have been if not for the Apartheid police? What kind of photographs would Sam Nzima have taken if Hector Pietersen had lived? Who might Chris Hani’s daughter have fallen in love with had her father lived? Had her father lived, might he have chosen to become a poet instead of a military commander? These are the untold stories of the unlived lives of our heroes. Heroes instead of fathers. Activists instead of husbands. Soldiers instead of artists. To live fully, we must grieve fully. Everything that could have been but wasn’t. Everything that wasn’t but should have been.
Join us for the closing event of “The Unlived Life” — a one-night-only music and storytelling ritual titled: “We Must Teach Each Other How We Want to Be Loved.”
This immersive, multi-media performance is not a summary, but a transformation: a live reimagining of the exhibition, curated as a collective grief ceremony. Through word, sound, and image, we simulate the experience of completing a grief cycle, not with answers, but with presence, poetry, and shared breath.
Taking place on 31 July 2025 at 19:00 at the Bijou Project Space in Observatory, the evening will feature Tanika Paschke-Moloi in spoken word, accompanied by Tiana Amari on bass, guiding us through stories that remember what never happened — and what still lives in us anyway.
Come to listen. Come to release. Come to reimagine love beyond loss.
