I was captivated and charmed by #bloodandsilver, the stage adaptation of the memoir of the same name by Jan Glazewski, performed by David Muller and directed and designed by Fred Abrahamse. The stage show has been adapted by Fred and David, from Jan’s memoir. David held my attention from beginning to end as he evokes Jan’s story of “blood” and “silver”. The blood refers to Jan’s life long condition of hemophilia. The silver is the family silver and heirlooms which were buried by his parents in Poland, before they fled war, seeking refuge elsewhere. His parents eventually ended up in South Africa. 70 minutes goes by in a flash and that is not easy in monologue theatre. It is witness and memory theatre - an intriguing story - enacted on stage -shared with an audience - not a lecture. It is like we are guests of Jan, in his living room, experiencing his story and holding our breath as we watch as the dots are connected by him. Fred’s stage design, images structures of neurons and nerves - connecting the dots of Jan’s quest for treasure and his quest for healing in reclaiming family legacy.Blood and Silver are the lifelines, leitmotifs running through Jan’s story - which includes displacement, exile, identity, family, health (hemophilia and HIV+), mortality…..Robyn Cohen’s review in her Cape Robyn Chat on social media.
