GAMKA KLASSIEK

Gamka Klassiek is the brainchild of Elna van der Merwe, renowned pianist from Stellenbosch, who has a special connection with Prince Albert: Deon, Elna’s husband, attended school in Prince Albert – the family farm just outside the town, is still in their possession. It has always been her dream to host a chamber music festival in this unique Karoo town. When sharing her vision with a few like-minded individuals, the dream became a reality … and Gamka Klassiek was born! The festival proudly celebrates Afrikaans culture, with Afrikaans musicians bringing their music to the Karoo countryside and community. Elna serves as the festival director as well as artistic director, supported by Japie Gouws (financial manager), Leone Pitts (logistics, marketing & media manager), and Ilzebet Oosthuizen (sponsorship manager).

Gamka Klassiek is presented in collaboration with PACT (Prince Albert Community Trust), a locally founded organization that aims to unlock young people’s potential. Their vision is to develop and transform the communities of Prince Albert, by creating platforms, programs, and opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals through education, upliftment, cultural enterprise, and cultivating leadership among children and youth.

The festival’s performances will feature some of South Africa’s most highly regarded musicians, including violinists Zanta Hofmeyr and Annien Shaw, violist Jeanne-Louise Moolman, cellist Susan Mouton, pianist Elna van der Merwe, and magnificent opera singers Lynelle Kenned, Corneill Muller, and William Berger. The weekend program, curated by Elna, will showcase an enticing array of musical treats for chamber music lovers across the spectrum.

Prince Albert will host Gamka Klassiek on an annual basis, providing musical sustenance and education for the communities of Prince Albert, Leeu Gamka, Klaarstroom, and beyond. In addition to PACT, we are partnering with local communities and businesses such as The Showroom, the NG Church, and Swartberg Hotel.

Gamka Klassiek 2025 will take place from 30 May – 1 June. Audiences can look forward to a celebration of chamber music, featuring Karoo-inspired concerts held in various venues throughout the town.
